You may have heard that our garbage/recycling company, SSC, no longer takes “clamshell” plastic containers, which CAN, however, be recycled through our other private collector, Ridwell. See below for just what constitutes a “clamshell” container. They are ever-present in our waste stream!

“CLAMSHELLS” GALORE!

I have modified a smallish grey toter to hold clear and clean clamshells until the bi-weekly Ridwell pick-up. It now lives in the West Waste Corral; as soon as I can find another suitable toter I’ll add that to the East Waste Corral. And “clamshells” are always welcome on our porch (#2696) as well.

The name “Clamshells” is deceptive and inadequate, really, since this category covers more than just the hinged containers of that description. Any clear plastic with a #1 on it is recyclable this way, including plastic egg cartons, cookie trays, small herb and large salad containers. Look for the (often tiny) #1 in the chasing arrows symbol. See how Ridwell describes this category HERE.

They CAN’T take blister packaging, colored containers or plastic bottles/cups.
